يهدف هذا البحث إلى معرفة البناء العروضي في شعر أحمد بن علوان، والتعرف عليه، ومدى التزامه بالأوزان والقوافي، أو محاولة التجديد فيها، وقد خلص إلى أن أحمد بن علوان حذا حذو القدماء في استعمال البحور الشعرية، وجدد في بعض الأوزان حيث خرج عن بحور الخليل، كما جدد في بعض مظاهر القافية، وجارَى شعراء عصره في الكتابة على البحر الكامل.
